Weston Intermediate School (WIS)
Grades 3 thru 5
Weston’s One World After-School Programs
 
Weston Youth Services is pleased to offer its WOW! After-School programs for students in Grades 3-5 at Weston Intermediate School. Classes will be filled on a first-come,
first -served basis.  Enrollment is limited in order to keep class size small. Please register your child only if he/she has a genuine interest in the program.
 
Registration/Payment:
Online registration will open on Tuesday, March 26th  at 12:01 a.m. If a program is full, you still may register and your child's name will automatically be placed on the wait-list (no payment is required at this time).  If space becomes available you will be notified.

 You have several options to pay:
  1. Pay online at the time of registration via Mastercard or Visa,
  2. Drop off a check (payable to The Town of Weston) in the WOW Mailboxes located in Main Office at Hurlbutt or WIS, or
  3. Drop off a check (payable to The Town of Weston) at the Youth Services Office/Town Hall Annex (located in the portables next to the BOE Central Office).
  4. Please Note:  If payment is not received by 5:00 p.m. on Friday, April 5th, your registration for the program(s) will be automatically canceled.
Special Note:  If your child was waitlisted for the winter session, you will have the opportunity to register only for that class, if it is offered, on Thursday, March 21st and Friday, March 22nd. Otherwise, we cannot guarantee space in that class. A link will be emailed to you.

See each course listing. ALL materials are included in the fees shown. Financial Aid is available.
 
Refund Policy:
Once a class starts, we cannot issue refunds or credits.
                       
Program Dates:
Classes begin the week of April 22nd and run thru the week of June 3rd     
 
Time:
All classes are scheduled from 3:15 pm – 4:15 pm (unless noted).  Parents are asked to wait outside in front of the building by the double doors to pick up their child(ren).  Please be prompt in picking up your child at 4:15 p.m.!  Please understand that our instructors have commitments after class.
 
Important Notes:
  1. Please be sure to follow the alternate dismissal manager program each week when your child is doing his/her WOW! class(es).Please make a notation if anyone, other than yourself, is picking up your child at the conclusion of the program. Additionally, please indicate on dismissal manager each week what your child’s dismissal plans are in the event of an unplanned after school activities cancellation
  2. In the event of an early dismissal due to inclement weather or any other school emergency, all after-school programs will be cancelled and the children will be sent home per your regular school dismissal plans. Cancellations will be announced on our website and an email will be sent out. If a class is cancelled at the last minute on the day it was to be held and we are unable to contact you, children will stay in the main office with the WOW! Supervisor until you arrive.  We will make every effort to make up missed classes due to last minute cancellations.
  3. There is no nurse on duty after normal school hours. In the event of illness or emergency treatment, we will call 911 and then contact parents, followed by the emergency contact, if necessary. If your child has any special medical needs, please contact Charlene Monn prior to the start of the session.
  4. Children may bring a small peanut/nut-free snack to be eaten before the program begins.  Children will be asked to wash hands before the program starts. Please do not send any home -made snacks!.
  5. Weston Youth Services reserves the right to cancel a class due to lack of student enrollment.
  6. If a student is dismissed for disciplinary reasons or withdraws from the school or the program, the parent forfeits the entire program fee.

Monday Programs
6 -week session
Apr. 22nd – June 3rd (no class May 27th)
 
Clay with Ms. Carroll! (3rd thru 5th grade)
Maximum # of participants: 10 students
Fee:  $ 126.00
Location:  Room # 117
Special Note: This is a 1 ½ hour class; 3:15 - 4:45 p.m
 
Students will have a blast diving into the incredible (and fun) medium of clay and learning about its amazing properties! We will explore pinch, coil, slab and attaching techniques creating a variety of 3-Dimensional Forms.  Students will glaze their projects once they are fired in the kiln, completing their artworks.  Projects for the spring will be different from those in previous sessions with the exception of the first project which is used as a teaching tool. All materials are included in this 1 ½ hour program that runs from 3:15-4:45 p.m.  (If you can’t make the Monday class, Ms. Carroll also offers a Wednesday class!)

Instructor:
Ms. Carroll has taught art in Weston for seven years.  She loves creating artworks with children of all ages and is excited to be able to continue this work in the after school W.O.W. program.
 
Design Studio 101 (3rd thru 5th grade)
Maximum # of participants: 10 students
Fee:  $144.00

Special Note:  This is a 1½ hour class;  3:15 - 4:45 p.m.
 
Design Studio 101 returns to the Weston Intermediate School this spring with all new projects! In Design Studio 101, students may use a variety of craft-making materials including paper, clay, wire, beads, ribbons, wood, decoupage, and fabric to create one-of-a-kind gifts, fashion items, greeting cards, jewelry, and more! If you enjoy being creative, please join Mrs. Smith for the fun and the excitement of making handmade designer projects. All materials are included in this 1 ½ hour program that runs from 3:15-4:45 p.m.

Instructor:
June Smith has lived in Weston with her family for the past 19 years. Upon moving to Weston, Mrs. Smith became active as a volunteer and an employee of the Weston Public Schools. She is currently a kindergarten aide at Hurlbutt Elementary School. Mrs. Smith is well-known for her creativity, enjoys working with children, and is looking
forward to sharing her crafting skills with her students.
 
 
 
Tuesday Programs
7-week session

Art with Ms. Liz (3rd thru 5th grade)
Maximum # of participants: 10 students

Explore your creativity with various media!  Ms. Liz returns to Weston Intermediate School where she will encourage fun and spontaneity, while inspiring students to challenge themselves!  Students will feel the energy of their work and challenge their imagination! The emphasis of this program is on experimenting with different mediums, opening your eyes, respecting others, and appreciating the wonders of creativity.
 
Instructor:
Liz Ward has been part of the Hurlbutt Kindergarten team for ten years. She has taught art in our Summer Creative/Arts Enrichment camp, Inspirational Yoga and Art camp, and taught K-WOW! for many years in our after-school WOW! programs at Hurlbutt Elementary School.  She is also an accomplished artist whose work can be viewed at www.lizwardart.com.
 
Zumba with Mary Jo  (3rd thru 5th grade)
Maximum # students:  15 students
Fee:  $ 102.00
Location:  Room # 121 (music room)
 
An hour of vibrant dance choreography, exhilarating music, and confidence awaits you in Zumba!  Mary Jo will encourage and guide students to gain self-confidence among their peers by teaching them how to control and keep their bodies healthy through movement. The choreography will increase in difficulty as the session continues. The music will be from various genres and decades including todays’ greatest hip hop tunes. Comfortable clothes, water bottle, and sneakers are highly recommended.

Instructor:
Mary Jo Colman has been a drama instructor at Hurlbutt for 6 years and is currently a preschool teacher in New Canaan. She has worked professionally with the International Mexican Dance Co, NYC Ballet Company, Mozartina Conservatory, and the Westchester Ballet Company. Mary Jo has studied master classes under the direction of Alvin Ailey, Martha Graham, Andrea de la Conte of Spain, Connoisseurs in Stamford, and many others in NYC. She is a trained zumba instructor and comes equipped with endless energy, innovative delivery, and a positive attitude that engages every child.
 
 
 
Wednesday Programs
7-week session
Apr. 24th - June 5th
 
Morning Chess (3rd thru 5th grade)
Maximum # of participants:  20 students
Fee:  $77.00
Location:  Room # 212
Drop Off:  7:45 a.m.  In the event of a two hour delay, class will begin at 9:45 a.m.
 
Want to learn how to play chess? Maybe your child is interested in learning more about the rules, strategies, and tactics of the game? Then, join us on Wednesday mornings and come discover each chess piece’s own style of moves in this exciting game!
Mr. Anderson is happy to bring morning chess to students in Grades 3-5 this spring Get into the fun of the game. Class begins at 7:45 a.m.!   
 
Instructor:
We are excited to have Mr. Anderson return this spring. Prior to becoming the TAG teacher, Mr. Anderson taught fourth grade in Weston for four years.  He loves the outdoors and spending time with his wife and two girls.
 
Cartooning (3rd thru 5th grade)
Maximum # of participants: 10 students

He’s back!  One of our very popular classes, Mr. Sansone has been teaching cartooning for many years, and is thrilled that students enjoy participating in this 1 ½ hour program.  Cartooning is a fun and exciting way to express yourself through art. It's a simple and fun way to tell a story, or describe the world. The course will cover basic elements used in developing original cartoon characters.  It will stimulate students’ desire and foster enthusiasm to cartooning as a form of their own artistic self-expression. 

Instructor: 
James Sansone was an art teacher in Weston for over 30 years.  He’s retired, but still returns each fall and spring to teach students this exciting art form!  (If you can’t make the Wednesday class, we offer a Thursday class as well!)

Clay with Ms. Carroll! (3rd thru 5th grade)
Maximum # of participants: 10 students
Fee:  $ 126.00
Location:  Room # 117
Note:  This is a 6-week program.  There is no class on May 8th

Special Note: This is a 1 ½ hour class; 3:15 - 4:45 p.m.

Location: Staff /Kitchen (next to music classrooms) 
Note: This is a 5-week class!  There is no class on May 1st!
Special Note: This is a 1 ½ hour class; 3:15 - 4:45 p.m.
 
Why stop at only one type of cuisine when you can have a taste of the whole world?  From soups, salads, desserts, and more, students should bring a willingness to explore new tastes and enjoy old favorites in this 1 ½ hour hands-on program offered at WIS!! Note: Items used in this program may contain nuts or gluten or may be processed on shared equipment with nuts or gluten.  Additionally, we cannot accommodate individual dietary needs or restrictions at all times.
 
Instructor:
Shelley McConnell, Weston’s  own Spanish teacher, was born and raised in Mexico City and grew up eating that country’s rich and varied cuisine, developing her taste for fresh and well-seasoned food.  Over the years, Shelley has tasted the food of many regions in the Iberian Peninsula and is very excited to bring her love for cooking to our after-school programs.
 

 
Thursday Programs
6-week session

NEW! Engineering Fundamentals with Legos!

Power up your engineering skills with Play-Well TEKnolgies and over 100,000 pieces of Lego!.  Apply real-world concepts in physics, engineering, and architecture through engineer-designed projects such as arch bridges, skyscrapers, motorized cars, and more!  Design and build as never before, and explore your craziest ideas in a supportive environment.  An experienced instructor will challenge new and returning students to engineer at the next level!  !   Note: Projects will not go home with students!

 
NEW! Sit and Stitch!
Maximum # of participants;  12 students
Fee:  $96.00

Come join Gabriela Low this spring for Sit and Stitch! During the course, students will learn how to use a sewing needle, yarn, and fabric! Easy hand stitching will be practiced and students will learn how to stuff a pillow and learn how to sew together the openings.  They will also be introduced to making yarn cords, braids, and string games.
 
Instructor: 
Gabriela Low discovered her love of crafts as a child in the Swiss school system. Today she enjoys sewing, knitting, needlework, and many other creative activities and is especially pleased when she sees a child’s enthusiastic discovery of their own creativity. Many know Gabriela who frequently works as a substitute teacher in the Weston schools.

Paint, Draw & More (3rd thru 5th grade)
Maximum # of participants: 12 students
Fee:  $108.00
Location:  Staff Room

Drawing classes teach children to draw what they see, to enhance their drawings with their own ideas and concepts, and to use different materials in creative ways.  The class environment is non-competitive, nurturing, and fun.  This program helps children to build their self-esteem through their drawing success and enhances hand eye coordination as well as spatial and color relationships.  Older children are encouraged to break artistic boundaries by exploring the world of fine art and illustrative drawing by using various techniques and mediums. We will use pencils, pastels, charcoals, and paints to discover sketching and drawing, develop technique, and strengthen drawing fundamentals.
 
Instructor:
Jo-Ann Thompson-Claybourne attended the School of Visual Arts in New York and has 38 years’ experience in sketching, drawing, painting, and collages.  She creates new and exciting pieces using different mediums to capture the vision she sees while creating each piece.  Jo-Ann has shown her works throughout Connecticut and New York.
